Trinity Taekwon-do brought home numerous medals after the Alberta ITF Provincial Championships in Edmonton last weekend (May 6).

Cameron Macdonald, founder of Trinity Taekwon-do Cochrane, says 328 competitors demonstrated their skills at Provincials held at NAIT in Edmonton. Macdonald, shares the Cochrane Club saw athletes competing as young as 5, and considered it a very successful outing.

"We sent up 19 athletes to the Provincial Championships and brought home 30 medals. It was a really good turn out for our club, it's definitely the numbers I would like to see at each of the tournaments."

Macdonald shares this tournament is the last one before summer break and the next possibility for the athletes will be in fall at the Western Canadian Championships.

This year was a great for competitions, says Macdonald, as more and more black belts got involved in board breaking events.

"Not a lot of our athletes had taken advantage of that or even had access to that for a lot of years so it kind of has been a new thing for us the last couple of years and this tournament, for example, we had six of our black belts go and everyone of them also participated in a board breaking event and that is one way our club has changed a lot."

Besides board breaking, Macdonald, was happy to see more families embracing the competitions.

"I describe it as team atmosphere with an individual sport, because taekwon-do you are competing individually but if we can create that team atmosphere by sending a bunch of families who enjoy going to these events together then it creates that comradery."
