The Cochrane High junior varsity girls basketball team has finished on top of the heap in the Rocky View Sports divisional regular season.

The team finished with a perfect record after downing the Bert Church Chargers, 51-20, at home, Feb. 13.

The Cobras now have a bye from the quarterfinals and don't see any further RVS play until their semifinal matchup on Mar. 2 on their home court.

Until then, head coach Tom Knitter says they are working to arrange some exhibition games against Calgary teams to prepare for the playoffs.

With only one loss, the W. H. Croxford Cavaliers are their closest rivals in the standings. The Bow Valley Bobcats have third place wrapped up and play their quarterfinal game at home against Chestermere on Feb. 28.

Cobras finish fourth in tourney

The Cobras had two aims going into the Holy Trinity Academy tournament last weekend, says Coach Knitter.

"We had a conversation on Thursday going into the tournament and as a team, we had a goal to go to the tournament to have fun and get better and I think we did both of those things," says Knitter.

Cobras Ella Reece, centre, and Alex Veckenstedt fights for control of the ball with a Bert Church player.

The competition was tough at the tournament, with many larger schools competing, and the Cobras faced their first losses of the season. Still, they finished fourth overall in the seven-team invitational.

In the first game, they beat the Holy Trinity Academy, before losing to Bowness, the eventual tournament winner. They rounded out their play against the Okotoks Composite High School. They were ahead going into the final two minutes of play but lost by three.

Knitter says there are valuable lessons to be learned from the stiff competition.

"Going against tough teams like this makes us better. And understanding what it's like to lose, especially in the fourth quarter, is really important for our girls. We always talk about going out to compete at a high level and I was pleased with how the girls played."

The Cobras came back from the tournament ready to get back to work in RVS play, says Knitter. They proved it by dominating the Chargers last night.

Jr. Boys Cobras Undefeated, too

The junior boys' varsity Cobras are also in first in their division and go into tonight's game against the Bert Church Chargers undefeated. Their playoff structure is identical and the Cobras won't see any RVS play until the Mar. 2 semifinals.

The Bow Valley Bobcats junior boys remain winless coming into their last regular season game tonight against second-place Chestermere.
