The St. Timothy High School's senior girls field hockey team has punched its ticket to the tier 2 City Championship after downing the Lester B. Pearson Patriots in the semi-finals, 1-0, on June 1.

In what assistant coach Crystal Saltesz called the team's best game of the year so far, the Thunder battled it out in the first half before scoring 11 minutes into the second, then fended off a bombardment of attacks in the dying minutes.

"The first half was a battle," says Saltesz. "We knew we had to come out strong, but we got into their zone and we did it," says Saltesz. "We probably played our best game of the season. I'm proud of the girls, they pulled it off."

There is a lot of history between the Thunder and Patriots and you could call last night's game a rubber match of sorts. The Thunder beat the Patriots for the tier 3 title in 2015, but the Pats grabbed the crown in overtime against St. Tim's last year.

The Thunder now face Bishop Grandin, who won the other semi-final game against the Centennial, 1-0. Bishop Grandin has only lost one game this season and finished a mere point behind the Thunder in the standings, so expect another close match.

The winner-take-all game goes June 6 at the Hawkings Field at the University of Calgary. Game time is 4 p.m.

St. Tim's remains undefeated in their first season in tier 2.
