The high school basketball season kicked off this week in the Rocky View and Calgary Catholic high school sports conferences

In the Dec. 5 contests both the Cochrane High Cobras junior and senior boys teams notched their first wins of the season at home against the George McDougall Mustangs, of Airdrie.

The junior boys dominated the Mustangs, 96-61, while the the seniors had a little more challenging match against their opponents but came out on top, 88-77.

On the road, both Cobra girls teams also came out on top in their opening hoops of the season. The senior girls beat the Mustangs, 83-34,while the junior team won 61-21.

The junior girls team of the Bow Valley High Bobcats won their matchup against the Springbank Phoenix, 51-35, and the junior boys lost 72-34. Their senior girls lost a squeaker to the Phoenix, 46-36.

The Bobcats junior boys and girls teams host Beiseker on Dec. 11. On Dec. 13, the Cobras boys teams are in Chestermere while the girls teams are hosting Chestermere the same evening here in Cochrane. The senior girls Bobcats have a bye week.

The regular basketball season continues until mid-February with playoffs beginning Feb. 27.

In Calgary Catholic Senior High School Athletic Association play, The St. Timothy Thunder senior boys lost their opening game on the road against John G. Diefenbaker, 93-30. Also on the road, they face St. Gabriel on Dec. 11 before hosting Bowness in their home season opener the following night, Dec. 12.

The senior girls Thunder are hosting their season opener on Dec. 12 against James Fowler.

There's a long season ahead with the City Championships being held Mar. 9-10.
