What started as a unique fun outdoor hockey event last season has evolved into a memorial game for the Cochrane Chaos female junior hockey team.

The Chaos and the Calgary Titans will be lacing up for the Owen Moore Memorial Outdoor Classic this Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, at the Springbank Park for All Seasons in memory of a young man who took his own life last May. Owen was just 22 at the time and a brother to two Cochrane Chaos alumni, Sarah and Kelly.

Chaos head coach Derek Loomer had coached the girls for several years and the family is very closely connected to the junior club that was established here in the 2016-17 season.

"The game is really in his memory and to raise awareness for mental health, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Mental Health Association," says Loomer.

Information booths will be located on site during the game.

"They'll be the opportunity to visit the booths, get information, make donations, raise awareness and to have a great game."

With both teams coming from the Calgary area, Loomer says there's a good base from which to draw a solid crowd in support of the Moore family, the competing teams and the Canadian Mental Health Association.

The club included an outdoor game at the All Seasons Park against the Lethbridge Eagles in their inaugural season as an added a twist to their schedule. The ice surface is protected from the elements by a white canvas top and has an ice plant.

"It really offers a unique experience," says Loomer.

The outdoor rink is located at 32224A Springbank Rd. Game time is 2 p.m.
