From the Alberta Summer Games to the U15 Canadian National Basketball Championship, it's been a busy summer for basketball coach Randy Peron.

The head coach of the Cochrane Cobras senior girls varsity basketball team is one of two assistant coaches with the Alberta U15 boys team and he believes the team has the potential to medal next week in Kamloops, B.C. in a championship that runs from Aug. 6 to 12.

The team has two more exhibitions games this week before heading to Kamloops early Sunday morning. First up is a game against Ontario, who won gold last year and he's interested to see how they will match up.

"Lengthwise we'll match Ontario, but we'll see about other the areas of the game. The team is excited to be playing Ontario first."

Peron was also part of the coaching staff last year, when Alberta finished fourth, their best showing since 2010. Because of that finish, they are now in the "power" division that also includes Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.

"I'm back at it and we have a different group, a different dynamic. We're feeling pretty good about going after a medal at this year's nationals and they haven't done that in a long time."

It's been a hectic summer for Peron, who was head coach of the Zone 3 girls team that won bronze at the Alberta Summer Games. They missed the gold final by two points in the semis.

"I went from the Alberta Summer Games head coaching job and right into the U15 provincial team. It's a busy fun summer for me."

"I'm very fortunate because I didn't even apply for this job. They called me up and asked if I would be interested. I never say 'no'. I love representing the province as a coach. It's just something when you hear your province's name. It gets you all pumped up and ready to represent the province, loud and proud."

Peron has also been recruited by Canada Basketball to help conduct a coaching clinic in Calgary this September.
