Following an outstanding showing at last weekend's (August 11 and 12) 2018 ASSA Region E Championships, the Cochrane Piranhas are looking to make a splash at Provincials in Edmonton this weekend (August 17-19).

After last weekend's Regionals in Calgary, the club learned that 35 Piranhas qualified or wildcarded to attend the 2018 ASSA Provincial Championships which begin today. In total, 18 individual swims and 5 relay swims qualified at Regionals while over the course of this past week, the Club learned another 18 individual swims wildcarded along with 9 relays.

Breanna Hendriks, Head Coach for the Cochrane Piranhas shares this year in comparison to last year, they have more swimmers competing. "Last year we had a lot of older swimmers so we had a lot of high ranking swims in Provincials last year, this year is slightly different because we have a lot of younger swimmers coming up. So this year we aren't having as many high ranking swims but overall we are having more swimmers. This is the most swimmers we have ever had qualify."

Over the past week, the coaching team has tried to keep the swimmers' nerves at bay by focusing on technique. "We have been doing a lot of things like turns, dives, finishes, stroke rates, all the little stuff that really adds up when we're in such a high caliber swim meet as opposed to earlier in the season."

After this weekend, other than a wrap-up party and their AGM in September, the Cochrane Piranhas will bid adieu to the 2018 swim season. While Hendriks can't believe the season is already over, she is excited to see these young fish progress over the coming years.
