Basketball Alberta has named Randy Peron as head coach of the zone 3 U14 girls basketball team for the Alberta Summer Games.

The long-time coach of 29 years is thrilled with being selected for the position. While he resides in Cochrane in zone 2, he sought the position so not to compete against a fellow coach.

"I didn't want to apply for that because I thought it would be cool if he had the chance to coach his daughter in the summer games. That's why I applied for the Calgary zone and I was fortunate to be selected and I'm extremely excited."

The pro-active coach has already booked gym times for the Apr. 22 and 29 tryouts and is using his extensive network in Calgary to learn of potential recruits. He's anticipated a solid turnout and will have guests help evaluate the players.

The Calgary team is the defending champions and he was their head coach for the 2016 games. He's coached the team three previous times and made it to the gold medal match twice. He has also coached the zone 2 team in the past.

The Alberta Summer Games are being hosted by Grande Prairie, July 19-22.

"It's a really great experience," says Peron. "I've loved it every time I've been involved with this. It's an experience the kids will never forget."

Coaching basketball is a passionate pursuit of Peron. In addition to coaching the seniors' girls team for Cochrane High School, he's in this 11h year of running the Red Jacket program from March to July that attracts players from Calgary, Cochrane, Innisfail, Chestermere and Okotoks

"I coach the better part of 10 months of the year. I love it. That's who I am and I'm very honoured and privileged that Basketball Alberta has selected me to do this again."
