A pair of Bragg Creek athletes have returned with silver medals from the Canada Summer Games with their teammates on Alberta volleyball teams.

Elyse Hart, 17, and Jackson Brennan, 18, and their respective men's and women's volleyball teams had solid records going into the finals.

The women's team was top seeded after remaining undefeated in the preminary round and beat New Brunswick in three sets straight in the semifinal. They ran into a smoking hot underdog Manitoba team in the final. Manitoba caught on fire by upsetting Ontario 3-1 in the semis. Alberta won the first set in the gold medal match but Manitoba won the next three straight to claim gold.

In men's play, Alberta finished second to the top-seeded and undefeated Ontario team. They beat Quebec in straight sets before losing a hard fought gold medal match to Ontario, 3-2. Alberta lost the first two sets but refused to go down so easily and bounced back to tie it up 2-2 and force a fifth and determining set. The fifth set was highlighted by a constant exchange of points. The score was even at 14 to force extra points to decide the gold medalist. Ultimately, Ontario was the one to score two straight points for the gold.

Setter Brennan, who wore number 1 for Alberta, was most recently part of the Alberta Volleyball Provincial championship team and the year previous was a member of the 4A high school champs.

Wearing number 4, Hart is also a setter and is an accomplished player who will be joining the University of Alberta Pandas women's team in the fall.
