The Cochrane Skating Club once again had a fantastic skating weekend (March 23-25).

Eight skaters from the club attended the STARSkate Championships in Spruce Grove with skaters attending from all over Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Coach Karen Allison shares the girls had some really great skates and personal bests. A top highlight for Allison was how the club placed in the Skate Canada Leading Edge series. "It's an additional reward-based program for both competitive and recreational streams where your scores from the competition are tracked throughout the season and at the end of the year they sum up all the points and the highest point winners wins the Leading Edge Award. So last year our gold skater Sydney won that award and she happened to win the gold event and the Leading Edge award again this year and we had our STAR 10 skater place second for the Leading Edge Series Award."

With this competition being the high point for recreational skaters, Cochrane skaters definitely laid out their best skates. "Our skaters worked hard, it's late in the season so I know it's a challenging to stay motivated until the end of March. I think overall our club represented very well."

With some of the categories having a number of skaters to compete against, Allison was impressed. "We had a podium finish in STAR 4, a podium finish in gold, and a podium finish in STAR 9 freeskate. Some of the groups are very large, our one skater in STAR 5 and she skated against 49 skaters and came in 8th."

Seven of the club's Intermediate skaters will be attending the Chinook Open in Lethbridge, April 6 to 8th and 8 skaters will be attending the United Cycle Sunsational Event in Edmonton, April 20 to 22 which will wrap up the 2018 competitive season for the club.

The club continues to have strong growth in results and numbers. If you are interested in learning more, spring registration for June just opened and you can find details HERE.
