For players in their final season with the senior girls Cochrane Cobras basketball team, it's a special night.

Prior to the Cobras' Feb. 13 game, Brooklyn Bolstad, Brittany Janzen, Kim Stainthrope, Rosie Thoron, Taelor Sherwood and Anne Roth were all saluted by head coach Randy Peron. Their parents were invited to join their daughters upfront as Peron provided a brief biography of each before they received a framed print of a memorable moment on the court as a Cobra. Each was greeted with a loud ovation from the people in the stands.

For Peron, it's a tradition he brought to Cochrane High eight years ago from his time at the Western Canada High School and both the senior boys and girls teams have since embraced the idea.

"It's very emotional. I'm very proud of the kids and what they've accomplished and where they're going in their future. It's really cool for me to be the one to talk about each player and it tugs at my heart because I care for these kids and I'm very proud of them."

Among these players, Brittany Janzen has been signed to play for the University of Calgary and her future coach was in the stands for Tuesday's game.

In the game that followed, the Cobras downed the Bert Church Charger, 81-44, but it wasn't without overcoming adversity in the first half. The Chargers came out hard and held the Cobras to a 32-30 lead at the half. The Cobras made adjustments to their defence and dominated the second half, outscoring their opponents, 49-14.

"They came out on fire," acknowledges Peron. "Their coach said that was their best half of basketball all year."

"It's good to have the team challenged with a little bit of adversity that way they get comfortable with it. They ended up responding very well when we made some changes in the second half to the defence."

Given the theme of the night, it seems suiting to have some big points racked up some senior players. Brittany Janzen scored 17 points and Anne Roth and Rosie Thoron scored 12 points apiece.

"It showed their leadership and proves the point that seniors play a very important on a high school team."

The Cobras now get a break in play before continuing their preparations for divisional playoffs and beyond. That includes playing in the Notre Dame tournament next weekend against some stiff competition.
