For three years the Town of Cochrane has invited kids to come catch for free at Mitford Ponds.

The one-day event held tomorrow (June 16), is a great way to allow your child to test the waters without any equipment necessary.

With so many great fishing locations around Cochrane, it is the perfect opportunity to introduce the sport, shares Alexis Miskiewicz-Tomaszyk, Town of Cochrane, Program Leader. "Lots of people in town have never fished so this is a great way for them to come out and get taught how to fish and have some fun, especially on Father's Day weekend."

The initiative led by Alberta Conservation saw 150 kids try the sport last year and the Town of Cochrane is one of their largest host sites. Working in partnership with the town, as well as Alberta Treasury Branch (ATB), Canadian Tire, Cochrane Aquatics and Fish and Wildlife; there are many activities happening at Mitford other than fishing. "ATB will be bringing snacks and refreshments, Canadian Tire is bringing rods and also providing mentors to teach people or help those in need, Cochrane Aquatics will be providing lifeguards and discussing water safety, the Fun Van and Discover the Ranche will be providing activities for the kids, and Fish and Wildlife will be on set as well, discussing different animals and safety."

The event is not just for little kids, shares Miskiewicz-Tomaszyk. "It is perfect for all ages. Fifteen and under are able to catch the fish and take the fish home with them, however, anybody sixteen and up can catch the fish but then they have to release it back into the pond."

Two weeks ago, Mitford was well stocked with fresh trout in preparation for tomorrow's event.

Lots of communities across Alberta will host a 'Kids Can Catch Day' tomorrow but few have as much going on as we do. "We are one of the few communities that put a lot of effort into different sponsors, different people coming out and provide different activities."

Kids Can Catch will run rain or shine from 9 am to 1 pm, although in the event of a thunderstorm they may bump times.

While you won't need any gear, there is a reminder for ages 16-64 you will need a Sportfishing Licence which can be bought at Candian Tire for $28 in advance.

So far 71 kids have registered but there is still lots of room and you can do so at 403-851-2534 until 4:30 pm today.
