Moving up to the tougher tier two hasn't fazed the St. Tim's Thunder senior girls field hockey team and they are poised to claim top spot in the regular season of the Calgary Catholic Senior High School league this week.

On May 16, the Thunder kept rolling, beating Robert Thirsk, 1-0, at Shouldice Park and remain undefeated with four wins and two ties. It was Robert Thirsk's first loss of the season.

There was a slow start to the Thunder's play but as the game progressed their veterans started to carry the play. Coach Michael Arsenault was on the sideline counting down the time for the players and in the dying minutes they responded with a late goal by Hannah Sharp.

Arsenault continues to be impressed with the play of his team that has many new players after several core players graduated last year.

We're playing with a third play grade 10s in the senior league. No one else is playing the way we're playing, so that's pretty impressive," says Arsenault.

Moving up a tier was not a decision the team made, but they haven't looked back.

"They boosted us up a division and now we're at the top of this division, so that pleases me immensely. It's testament to how good the girls are and my assistant coach Crystal Saltesz is just fantastic with them."

The Thunder's regular season ends tonight against Lester B. Pearson and when the dust settles they'll be meeting the eighth-seeded team in the quarterfinals on May 29. Semifinals go June 1 and the City Championship game is on June 6.

"That's why this was such an important game because we'll play the team at the bottom of the division if we come out on top, so it will make our ride throughout the playoffs a a little bit easier."

In only their second season, the Thunder won the tier 3 City Championship in 2015. Last season they made their second City Championship appearance and lost in overtime.
