St.Tim's will be represented at City Championships after a good showing at the CSHSAA Divisional Meet held on Wednesday (May 17).

Travis Cummings, Thunder Head Coach, says he was pretty impressed with how the athletes did considering the chilly weather. "It was really cold the kids kind of suffered a bit, they were troopers though."

Despite a cold morning start, ten athletes still qualified. "That ties are school record, which is awesome, I wasn't really expecting that. We only had eleven athletes competing at divisionals which is pretty cool. It's not easy to do that out of Calgary."

Cumming shares for the athletes to make City's is pretty impressive and a big accomplishment. "Sophia (Nowicki) and Josh (Novak) have a pretty good shot at making provincial's, if they make it out they are a pretty big shot of a medal threat at provincials."

Besides Nowicki claiming a first spot victory and Novak closing the gap on his competition and running a personal best, Cummings, was pleasantly surprised with the 4x400m. "The boys set a school record and I didn't even think they would make it out of our div and then we came in second in the divs, so they were pretty stoked about that."

While they had some decent field events, the best results came from distance.

Results are listed below:

  • Sophia Nowicki - SG - 1st 3000m, 2nd 1500m
  • Mikenna Spademan - JG - 2nd triple jump
  • Josh Novak - IB - 3000m 2nd, 1500m 3rd
  • Scott Delsing - JB - 3000m 2nd, 1500m 6th
  • Eric Swedlo - JB - 3000m 3rd, High Jump 4th
  • Maggie Brolsma - JG - 3000m 3rd
  • Maddy Cruickshank - SG - 200m 5th, 400m 3rd
  • Garett Van Roon - IB - 1500m 4th, 3000m 4th
  • Open Boys 4x400m - Josh Novak, Trey Felesky, Talleiv Bredeson, Garett Van Roon - 2nd (school record 4:03.60)

As far as what training looks like for City's, Cummings, shares it's not so much about the volume but about the consistency and getting intensity in at the right time. "All my athletes have a program for the long weekend, it is important that they make sure they are staying consistent over the long weekend, we will do a prep workout on Tuesday, and a bit of priming speed on Thursday and then the hays in the barn. There is not a lot they can do to help themselves right now but there's a lot they can do to hurt themselves, that is what I have driven home the last week and a bit."

City Championships will occur May 27 at Foothills Athletic Park.
