Xavier Vaillancourt helped quarterback Southern Alberta to its sixth consecutive win at the Alberta Bantam Bowl, May 22.

The South overpowered the North, 27-8, at Foote Field in Edmonton, and the rising Cochrane quarterback was one of the two QBs at the helm for the match.

The South kept to the ground for most of its offense and unfortunately didn't give much opportunity for the young Cochrane quarterback to unleash his arm.

"We didn't get too many pass play calls. I was a bit disappointed, but the team won and that's more important," says Vaillancourt.

The Bantam Bowl is held every other year to reward and showcase the talent of the graduating grade 9 players in an all-star format. It also gives them a little insight into what occurs when playing football at a higher level, something many of the players aspire towards as they further develop their skills.

"We had a roomate and scheduled team meetings so you could get the feel of playing university sports or even maybe pro," says Vaillancourt. "I'd love to play university levels sports."

The 6'1" 14-year old was named one of the team's seven captains and enjoyed the experience offered by Football Alberta.

"We went out before the game for the coin toss, and tried to be leaders on the field and stay positive."

Vaillancourt was selected for the team following a three-day camp in April.

The Bantam Bowl is held every other year and the South has won all of them but the inaugural game in 2005.

Come fall, Vaillancourt will be a rookie with the Cochrane High Cobras.
