A triple header by the three adult teams of the Bow Balley Rugby Club last Saturday included the first home game of the newly-formed women's team.

The team played sevens against Okotoks and while they fell 17-14, it was a special day for a budding new team.

"It was great to have the women out there playing their home opener," says coach Tyler Hawes.

Erin Callaghan, one of the founding members, says they have gone from being largely a squad of newbies to one beginning to gel as a team in a relatively short period of time.

"About 90 per cent of the girls hadn't even watched rugby before," says Callaghan. "They came out and played and they've just taken it under their wing and are exceeding all expectations."

The June 24 game in Cochrane was the first time they had played sevens with previous outings being 10s and 15s. That included a victory over the Irish in the 10s format when they teamed up with Okotoks.

"It was a first time we beat the Irish, so it's a really good testament of how well the girls have been training lately," says Callaghan.

The team was started when a bunch of friends on the sideline started to talk it over.

"We thought, well, anything boys can do, we can do better, so we put a team together and went from there."

There's an open invitation for any women interested in giving the sport a try. They practice on Tuesdays at Bow Ridge and Mitford on Thursdays. Startin time for both is 6 p.m.

"Even if they just want to come along and train, we'd love for them to come out and enjoy rugby like we do," says Callaghan.

Grizz Make It Six Straight

When the Saints scored in the first half it gave their team a bit of a confidence boost in their game against the Grizz, June 24. But it was shortlived and the tier 2 Grizzilies went on to win the match, 63-10.

"We don't allow a whole lot of points, so for them to score we'll have to look at the video and see exactly what happened," says Grizz coach Hawes. "I guess it shows how hard it is to score of the Grizz."

Hawes says the Grizz didn't perform well in the first half but still managed to put up points and stay ahead. But in the second half it was a completely different story.

"They really started moving the ball around and scored some really nice drives. Some things we've been talking about the last few weeks, playing what is in front of us and playing smart rugby, started to showed in the second half. They scored a couple of really nice drives. Hopefully that's a sign of things to come."

Babas come close

The tier three Babas may have lost, but it was a squeezer against the top team in their division.

The Knights, the police/fire team from Calgary, won in a 55-50 scorefest and Babas coach Hawes continues to be impressed with the growth of the team.

"I was pretty impressed with how the young guys played. It was a fantastic game."

All Bow Valley adult rugby teams are next participating in Stampede Sevens tournament. The regular season doesn't resume until the Calgary Stampede ends.
