Team Alberta’s women hockey team is facing British Columbia in the semifinals of the Canada Winter Games later this afternoon.

The team, which includes Cochrane’s Sarah Wozniewicz, came away with a vital 3-0 win in the quarterfinals yesterday over Manitoba to keep their medal hopes alive.

It was a big night for Wozniewicz. She scored two of Alberta’s three, including a empty-netter, and assisted on the other.

Alberta came out of the preliminary round with a 1-2 record. They were trounced by British Columbia, 6-1, in their opening game before rebounding with a 4-3 shootout win over Nova Scotia in which Wozniewicz scored her first goal of the tournament. Game three was a close 2-1 loss to Ontario.

British Columbia has been the powerhouse in the Games so far, going undefeated in all four of their matches.

Quebec and Ontario are facing off in the other semifinal matchup.

The bronze medal match goes tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. followed by the gold medal game at 12:30 p.m.
