Elementary and junior high wrestlers shined in Edson this past weekend at the AAWA Junior Olympics.

About 3 junior high and five elementary aged wrestlers made the trek to Edson where they faced some pretty tough competition.

Frank Dostaler, Cochrane Cowboys, coach, says he was impressed with how the wrestlers performed.

"They all did really well. These kids as a group, the elementary and junior high kids placed very well, they are very strong wrestlers for their age group."

Junior High:

Chase dominated his matches

Dostaler says after one particular match this weekend he is awestruck at how fast the young wrestlers climb in skill and confidence.

"Nicholas Hooper this last weekend in Edson, that kid had an amazing match. It was literally a blood, sweat, and tears match because Nicholas has two brutal bloody noses where they had to stop the match and clean him up. We had both athletes in tears at one point or another and there was sweat everywhere; I think it was a 13-12 match and an epic battle for a young kid that has only been wrestling for three years now. A shining moment for him, his parents, and the coaches."

Next competition for the Cowboys is in two weeks at the Alberta Open; Dostaler says this is a major opportunity for the Cowboys.

"We have teams coming from the Yukon, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and all over Alberta. The last time we hosted this tournament was two years ago, we had about  450 athletes and we are expecting more than that this this time. It is probably, I am thinking, the biggest event in Alberta and maybe even Western Canada."

The Cowboys will look to pin their way to a win on March 4.
