Local parks and recreation groups have a golden opportunity this Saturday, June 23 to give an overview of their organizations to members of the town's newly-formed parks and recreation committee.

The committee is reaching out to community groups to fully understand the width and depth of recreational-based organizations in the community and has set aside a full day to hear from delegations.

Given the volume anticipated, each group is being provided 10 minutes to tell their story to the nine-member board, chaired by town councillor Tara McFadden.

"This will be the first opportunity for groups to tell the committee, who they are, where they are right now in terms of their structure and size, and what's their vision for the future," explains Gerry Murphy, Cochrane's senior manager of Community Services.

While the town has reached out to the groups they know of, they've also left the doors open for others to participate.

"We want to make sure we're not excluding any particular group. We want to make sure we have a level playing field for access to the committee," he says.

Those wanting to make a presentation need to contact the town to receive a timeslot and list of questions they should answer. Video and PowerPoints can form part of their presentation. They should email tanya.fiwchuk@cochrane.ca.

"We have quite a few and that's why we've dedicated an entire Saturday," says Murphy.

He says this isn't a one-off and he expects they'll be other opportunities in the future for groups to make presentations.

This session falls outside of the committee's regular monthly meetings, currently scheduled for the first Wednesday of the month, excluding August.

The committee has met once so far since being established to advise town council on parks and recreation matters in Cochrane. They have reviewed terms of reference, completed introductions and orientation and discussed their plans for the future, says Murphy.
