A record-breaking number of Albertans, including those in the Airdrie-Cochrane riding, flooded to the advance polls and whether that will translate to high voter turnout in the Alberta election will be seen tomorrow.

Today is the second day in the voting hiatus before the storm of the Apr. 16 election that will determine who will lead Alberta into the future. By Saturday, an estimated 696,000 voters had cast their ballots in advance, nearly triple the 235,000 who voted in advance of the 2015 election.

Here in Airdrie-Cochrane, 14,143 electors cast their ballot at these polls, an estimated 12,000 who call the riding home. The others came from other ridings, predominantly those in the Airdrie-East and the Banff-Kananaskis ridings.

Peter Guthrie, his wife Tracy and daughter Camryn, were joined by Paul Singh in the Heartland neighbourhood during the Helping Hands' food bank drive on Saturday.

In Cochrane, Apr. 10 was the busiest day at the advance polls by a narrow margin. In all, 6,880 voted here at the Grand Professional Building polling station.

Overall, Airdrie-Cochrane advance polls were the second busiest in the province.

Candidates on the move

Candidates are wrapping up what has been a hard 28 days of campaigning. Having secured the nod of their parties earlier than the rest, it's been an even longer haul for the NDP's Steve Durrell and the UCP's Peter Guthrie.

Over the weekend, all candidates were actively campaigning.

Following a rally with NDP leader Rachel Notley in Calgary on Saturday, Steve Durrell was back in Cochrane East door knocking with the help of Ellen Perrault.Guthrie had a full schedule of activities, kicking off Saturday by participating in the Cochrane food bank drive before hosting a barbecue at his Cochrane headquarters, doing a little door knocking and wrapping up the day at the Cochrane Lions Club's Spring Barn Dance. Sunday he was honoured at the Vaisakhi celebration at Mehtab East Indian Cuisine before door knocking in Airdrie.
