This years strain of influenza seems to be hitting people particularly hard, but Alberta Health Services says people are having very normal symptoms for the strain that has hit Alberta.

AHS, Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Judy MacDonald, says they are seeing a lot of cases of influenza strain AH3, which will cause more illness than other strains, typically in the elderly and children.

"There has been more activity in the emergency rooms for influenza treatments, but unless you are experiencing extreme symptoms, you can call Health Link or go to your family doctor."

Dr. MacDonald adds they are seeing less of the AH3 strain coming in but are expecting another strain to be hitting Alberta any day now. She stresses the flu vaccine will be available until the end of March, for those people who want to avoid the second wave of influenza.

Dr. MacDonald has similar advice any mom would tell you when you get the flu: Stay home, get rest and lots of fluids.

If you experience symptoms like fever or difficulty in breathing that get worse after a few days, seeking medical advice is warranted. Otherwise home in bed is the best place to be.
