A lot more chatter has started with the passing of Ty Pozzobon around concussions.

The young bull rider's life was cut short due to underlying issues and symptoms of past concussions; Cochrane will take the lead on helping those with concussions get back to their norm.

Baseline testing is an opportunity for healthcare professionals to understand your 'normal' range and compare your testing results after a potential concussion.

Anne Garrido, Rival Boxing, Coach, says the science around concussions and sports related concussions is evolving quickly.

"The more we know about the brain, the more we want to be proactive."

Anyone can experience a concussion, at any time, even in minor recreational activities,

"Any kind of impact can create a concussion it doesn't have to be a direct blow. Anything can happen everywhere, boxing has a bad reputation but realistically you can see the punch coming and protect yourself, other sports they are lots of impact and the athlete doesn't necessarily see it coming."

Garrido knows that side effects from concussions can affect your life in a variety of ways.

"There are so many side effects to a concussion from depression to headache to so many different symptoms."

Testing your normal baseline will include a comprehensive computerized testing looking at memory, speed of mental processing, reaction time, and executive brain function. Along with a hands on assessment, looking at your medical history, cervical screen, vesibulo-ocular motor function, ocular motor control, reaction time, blood pressure, and balance; once the information is compiled a baseline score is computed.

"That gives the therapist an idea who you are on a normal day, then you go and play sport and something happens and you're diagnosed with a concussion. Well  you go back to your therapist and they will do another assessment and compare the baseline, they have treatment protocols to get you back to your normal life."

Coaches, parents, and kids are all invited to a free information evening to learn about this new technology and service coming to town.

Garrido is hoping many kids and athletes get base tested so therapists know how to help in case of a potential injury down the road.

"You're being proactive, when you get your baseline done then first you have a therapist that knows what your normal self is. They have a good clear image of how you see, how you think, how your reaction time is... what is your normal functioning and then by having that reference if something happens you can have someone help you."

Andra Hill and Krista Taylor from Cochrane Sport Physio are two physical therapists who are trained in effectively assessing and treating concussions, they will explain the process at Rival Boxing on March 14 at 7:30 pm.
