Following an RCMP investigation, Marshall Rath, 19, of Bragg Creek has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and with one count of being in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.  Rath's next court appearance is scheduled for Mar. 13 in Cochrane Court.

Charges are expected to be laid this afternoon against the 19-year-old male suspect in an attack on an elderly Bragg Creek woman late last night.

Corporal Troy Savinkoff of the Cochrane RCMP confirmed the man in custody is a family relative of the woman in her 70s and was arrested on the scene without any incident.

The woman was able to get away to call 911 herself after an ongoing attack that left her with multiple, serious lacerations. The RCMP applied emergency first aid until EMS arrived on scene and treated her on route to a Calgary hospital.

Savinoff says the injuries were life-threatening but she is now in stable, but serious condition. She spoke with the RCMP last night and again today to provide further insight on the attack.

It's an extensive investigation, though, and the RCMP have not yet provided any indication of the potential motive. Several people have been interviewed as investigators piece together what lead to the attack.

"It’s unusual and what happened last night is shocking," says Savinoff.

He confirmed the suspect does make weapons, possibly as a hobby.
