The Cochrane BMX track will see hundreds of riders this weekend (June 24 and 25).

Hosting Provincial races 1 and 2, Brad Christensen, President of the Cochrane BMX Club, says it is going to be an electrifying weekend. With 550 riders hitting the track both Saturday and Sunday it will be an amazing weekend.

"I am expecting this to be the biggest race of the year. The weekend is like nothing you have ever seen. It is body to body people, the track is packed with tents, and fields filled with trailers. It is just an awesome environment."

From new riders competing in their first race, to elites and pros trying to win money over the weekend, Christensen is thrilled Cochrane gets to host again.

Riders across Alberta will represent their respective clubs in the provincial races. Christensen, states Saturday and Sunday are treated as independent race days and are considered the first two of eight in the series. "There are four weekends, and then the final 9th Provincial Race is held in Medicine Hat and that is called the Grands. Anyone can go in the Grands, but you have to have raced 4 out of 8 provincial races, and that is where the plates, trophies and all the hardware is handed out."

Christensen, looks forward to hearing how numbers are stacking up provincially, but says many Club's have reported a spike in membership. "Our club is growing every year and in talking to some of the other Club Presidents they are seeing the same. It has been constant growth year over year over year over the last four to five years we are seeing a big surge."

Hosting provincials may be a lot of work for the Cochrane Club but it does bring the local track a lot of attention. "We spent a lot of hours the last month, prepping the track, working on raffle tables. We've got amazing sponsors for the weekend that have really stepped up. It is going to be a fun event and a chance to win some great prizes. There is a ton of hours that need to go into helping run this event smoothly this weekend and our club has really stepped up to help."

Everyone is welcome and Christensen encourages all community members to check out the races and cheer on our local riders. "We have some of the top riders in Alberta. Some of our riders in Cochrane even have National plates, so some of the top riders in Canada are here."
