Cochranites should prepare for a hot one this week as the mercury is expected to soar.

Brad Power, Meteorologist with Environment Canada says expect hot weather temps to stay with us all the way until at least Saturday (August 11). "There is a strong upper ridge building into Alberta over the next week and we're expecting temperatures to soar for a good portion of Southern Alberta. Areas closer to the mountains are going to be in the low to mid-30s while the further east you go they're going to be approaching close to 40 degrees in a few areas."

While Power did not want to predict weather conditions too far out, he says people should take necessary precautions with the expected high temperatures. "People need to make sure they are staying hydrated and make sure you are able to cool off at some point during the day. We typically suggest people get a little time in some air-conditioned buildings like a shopping mall or even a friend's house that has air conditioning just so they can cool off. Make sure you have lots of water and watch for signs of heat stroke and heat-related illnesses."

Young children, seniors and those with pre-existing medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease should be extra careful and monitored if possible. A heat warning has been issued by Environment Canada for the Airdrie-Cochrane-Sundre-Olds areas with the following messaging:

Residents of and visitors to the above warned regions are advised to take the following precautions to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours:
- Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
- Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time indoors at cooled buildings (including malls or indoor pools).
- Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
- Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.
