On July 4th, Fortis commenced work on converting Cochrane's streetlight bulbs.

The LED Streetlight Conversion Project began in April 2016 with six communities receiving approval growing to another 131 more receiving the green light, including Cochrane.

It is anticipated the conversion will take the better part of two weeks and is expected to wrap up by July 16th.

Natasha Russell, Fortis Communications Advisor, shares converting our streetlights is a positive initiative. "LED technology offers many benefits including reduced energy consumption resulting in lower costs for our municipal customers. The LED technology that we're using offers a warmer light which results in minimal blue light exposure, dark sky friendly with zero up-light (less light pollution) and skyglow (light is directed downward) and of course great for going green."

Although there is no set dollar amount for Fortis to do the conversion, shares Russell, those opted-in communities will see cash savings down the road. "The cost is different per community because there is a different number of lights so I don't have a firm number. What I do know is that whatever the cost is, it is realized over time from the savings they will see from the conversion of HPS bulbs to LED because as we know LED does save energy."

Eventually, Fortis would love to see all communities convert. "We are putting it out to all the communities we provide service to as an opportunity. Anyone who is interested and able to proceed we will work with them to give them that option."

Cochrane has approximately 1869 streetlights that will be converted with the program and if you notice one not functioning you are encouraged to call 310- WIRE or use their mobile APP found here.
