Town crews and fire services personnel have been taking actions to alleviate a rotten egg smell coming from local storm ponds that is impacting some nearby homes.

Some homeowners living near storm ponds have reported a rotten egg-like smell in their homes and upon investigation, town personnel discovered it was coming from decaying vegetation that's trapped below the ice.

"This is a new issue for us, but we’re hearing it’s also happening in other municipalities, including Calgary," explains Laurie Drukier, Cochrane's senior communication advisor.  "Fire and roads crews are working together to cut holes in storm ponds to provide an escape route for the gas."

The obnoxious odour has been entering homes through the storm sewer system, weeping tile and sump pump connections.

The problem will likely be short-lived, but should it be impacting your home the town recommends covering or plugging your weeping tile and sump pump connections.

"We’re looking for other ways to manage and control this potential problem, but currently there are no definitive industry best practices," she says.
