Didn't Get Compost? There'll Be One More Chance

There were lineups for the town's Compost Giveaway, May 12, as residents become more aware of the program, now in its second year.

Waste and Recycling Manager Fabrizio Bertolo estimates there were about 500 vehicles that passed through the gates and each were entitled to receive about 30k of the nutrient-rich compost. 

"It was a great success," says Bertolo."It's getting more and more popular and we love to show people what we are doing with the organics. We want to thank them for using their green carts and for diverting all organic material from the landfill so we can turn it into great compost and give it back to them."

Julian deCocq was first in line and arrived shortly after 9 a.m. with a book in hand to pass the time. About a dozen vehicles were lined up when Bertolo opened the gate at 10 a.m. and the line even extended longer at some points, stretching the traffic circle by the SLS Family Sports Centre. People continued to roll through the yard all day, first in threes, then later in fives. It continued right through to 4 p.m.

Bertolo says he appreciates the help received from a number of volunteers to assist with the event, including members of the Glenbow Community Garden.

Most of the 15 metric tonnes (15,000 kg) on site has found use in local gardens and landscaping and more will be brought in for the second and final offering of the season. Bertolo said it will likely be held on a weekday/s during the last week of May so to accommodate people who are unavailable on weekends.

An information sheet on how to use the compost was also provided.

"It's extremely rich in nutrients so you want to be careful how you use it and blend it in with other soil," explains Bertolo.

Calgary has had thousands taking advantage of their first-ever compost giveaway since the launch of their green bin program.
