Drivers beware, visibility is currently very poor at the top of Highway 1A.

Carol Tapsay shares she is one of many vehicles that are currently pulled over at the top of the hill and that visibility is practically nil.

RCMP Constable Kary Moore, shares Mother Nature is certainly not helping keep our local roads and highways safe. "This past week has been unusual as the weather has been all over the place. The highways have been snow covered which is a challenge whether just trying to manoeuvre or reduced visibility on the highways and cold weather. All of those factors when they are all in place at the same time makes driving treacherous."

A number of accidents were reported over the past few days with road conditions mostly being the cause. An accident on Sunday (February 11) saw Cochrane RCMP and Rocky View Fire Services respond when one of the crashed vehicles caught fire and a serious collision was also noted on Monday (February 12) off of Grand Valley Road and Highway 1A between a pickup truck and minivan.

Moore reminds residents to leave plenty of room, drive for the conditions, slow down and turn on the headlights. "We want vehicles to be able to see each other when there is reduced visibility and blowing snow. People have daytime driving lights on so they have sort of headlights on however the tail lights aren't on, you need to make the motion of turning your headlights on rather than just daytime."

If you need to pull over on the highway make sure you are in a safe spot to do so and not stopping in the pathway of other vehicles.
