Two Grade 12 students got a helping hand on Tuesday morning (June 12), as they were awarded $1500 each.

For 9 years the Clearwater/Spray Lake Sawmills Recreation Park Society Scholarship has supported two students who show exemplary qualities in all aspects of life.

Robin Mitchell, General Manager of Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre says they received twenty applications this year and although it wasn't an easy decision, the board chose Connor McNeice and Taylor Krawec as this year's recipients. "All twenty were deserving of the actual award; for the committee, it was quite difficult, a little arguing here and there...but at the end of the day I believe we picked the two best candidates that represent this scholarship."

Both McNeice and Krawec were grateful to hear they had been selected as the additional funds will come in handy as they head to secondary school this fall.

McNeice, who is well known for taking down his opponents on the wrestling mat says he found out the great news while attending practice in Italy. "It means a lot to get this scholarship, it's going to help me a lot next year with moving into Calgary and allowing me to focus more on my athletics and academics."

Also thankful, Krawec shares her leadership involvement, volunteering efforts and time spent as a figure skater helped her stand out. "I am really lucky, it will help out a lot and I may not have to work as much while I am going to school."

Applicants had to submit their grade 11 and 12 academic marks, explain how they give back to the community and make a difference, as well as what their involvement at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre has been. "We are really trying to find the well rounded, overarching student that best represent the talent we have at our local high schools."

Mitchell gave thanks to the foresight from Past President, John Clarkson, for instigating the scholarship in the first place. It was Clarkson's wish to continue supporting the town while recognizing youth in high school who do so much for our community.

Both McNeice and Krawec are headed to the University of Calgary this fall; with McNeice pursuing studies in economics while Krawec studies biological sciences.
