The price of gas could spike 5 to 7 cents per litre by midweek in Alberta according to GasBuddy's forecast..

The company that specializes in tracking gas prices says stations in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Sasaktoon and Winnipeg are all currently selling gas at a low retail margin and that may result in prices climbing by midweek.

It follows a 2.5 cents per litre drop in the price last week and an average price of 98.49 cents on Sunday.  This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.6 c/L in the last week to 109.99 c/L.

Including the change in gas prices in Alberta during the past week, prices yesterday were 7.0 c/L higher than the same day one year ago and are unchanged versus a month ago. The national average has increased 1.3 c/L during the last month and stands 8.5 c/L higher than this day one year ago.

Still, national, prices are expected settled after spikes witnessed from the peak of the hurricane and tropical storm season.

"With a settling of Atlantic tropical storms, gas prices should continue tapering off throughout the upcoming week for most Canadians," says Dan McTeague, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy. "Although there may still be hiccups in certain regional markets, the week ahead appears to present a quieter outlook than we saw a few weeks ago."

According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on Sept. 25 in Alberta have ranged widely over the last five years: 91.49 c/L in 2016; 101.10 c/L in 2015; 115.60 c/L in 2014; 112.40 c/L in 2013; and 118.74 c/L in 2012.
