If the cold weather is making you a little stir crazy, why not burn off the unspent energy at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre this Family Day Monday (February 18)?!

Tara Greene, Program Supervisor, shares historically the fitness centre is quite busy on Holiday Monday and this year guests will find no shortage of activities. "We are having a big Family Day event. Basically, for $25 you can bring your whole family down and participate in all our activities, but if you are a member, it is free. We have a lot of activities planned between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and this year we will be doing things differently by taking pressure off of Guest Services."

In the past, drop in users would have to check in with Guest Services before each class/activity and they are hoping this year to make the process easier and less time consuming for all. "This year you just need to get your Family Day wrist band at Guest Services, and then you can spread out throughout the facility and go to the individual activities without having to come back to Guest Services every time and check in, and so we are hoping it's going to run a lot smoother this way. Last year people spent a lot of time standing in lineups and so this year we have that under control and it shouldn't be nearly as bad as last year."

Considering it is Family Day, this year, SLSFSC has created a few different classes everyone can participate in. "We have tried to plan a few fitness classes just for families; we have a family boot camp happening for ages 7 and up, we two have disco spin classes for ages 12 and up, and a family yoga class for all ages. These are new and not something we normally do on Family Day so we are hoping it will be a nice bonus for families."

List of activities going on for their Family Day event.

On top of the family classes, there is a number of activities for youth including curling, archery tag, and the usual sessions of climbing and jumping in the Kid Zone bouncers. Families can also take advantage of various drop-in swimming sessions and numerous on-ice activities.

Cochrane BMX will also be on site kicking off registration for their upcoming season and for those interested in what SLSFSC summer camps are like, the sports centre has a special deal. "For the first time, we have a one day camp that is going to be held on May 17th (PD Day) and we are calling it 'A Day in the Life of Camp', and people can register on Family Day for $10 cheaper than they can after that. We will have a summer camp booth set up and there will be limited spots available, so we are thinking it will probably fill up that day. It will just give people a little taste of what our summer camps will be like."

Being physically active is good for all, shares Greene, and with lots of different programs going on, there is something for everyone. "It is good to be active with your family and do something physical; it is healthy, good for our bodies, and it brings families together. Families who play together stay together."

The Cochrane firefighters will also be hosting a game on Holiday Monday and you can read more below.
