Cochrane RCMP is reminding residents to take safeguarding measures when headed out of town for business or pleasure.

With a couple of recent rural residential break-ins, Constable Kary Moore is being proactive by sending out some reminders so you don't fall victim.

"We know that potential or would be thieves do drive around and look for residences that don't appear to have anybody in them; so no footprints to the door, tire tracks in the driveway and things like that."

Homes that looked lived in are generally less targeted and all it takes is a little effort from the homeowner before they vacate town. "Have someone check in on your house daily so taking in your newspaper and mail, drive in and out of the driveway a couple times. Have your lights on timers so they come on and off at random times. You can also hire a house sitter or have someone stay there, just to have someone in your home."

When it comes to social media, Cst. Moore gives a thumbs down to announcing your departure on Facebook or Twitter as well as posting pictures clearly indicating you're holidaying. "I would deter that, that's not a good idea. Again people that are surfing, maybe not so much your friends but friends of friends, could be searching, looking and figure out where you live and think that's a good spot to check out."

One last piece of advice; never underestimate your neighbourly relations who can help keep a watchful eye on your property. "When you are leaving, perhaps let your neighbours know so that they can be aware that there shouldn't be anyone there or if there is supposed to be someone that they know what vehicle or he or she is, just so they can report in anything suspicious and just look a little closer while you are away."

Property crimes continue to be an ongoing battle for the RCMP, but thanks to community members who report suspicious activity they have been able to take some criminals off the streets.
