The upstairs lounge of the Cochrane Lions Events Centre (CLEC) is closed right now for renovations and when it reopens it will hardly be recognizable to users.

Falling on the steps of upgrades to the rodeo grounds last summer, the Cochrane Lions continue to breath new life into the facility, 109 5th Ave.

Gone will be the dated gold-like coloured walls and worn out carpeting in the lounge. Upgrades, including a new a/v hub and retractable large screen, will enhance the facility for users.

CLEC chair Matt Zoethout says the centre continues to be a labour of love for the Lions Club to better serve both large and small functions in the community. The lounge upgrade has been in the planning stages for some time and work went full throttle over the weekend.

This dated colour is now a thing of the past.

"We're making it more presentable for upscale kind of events. There's a change in flooring, change in the colours, updated washrooms. We're also excited about the innovative changes we've made. We want to make sure that when people come to use the facility they're getting a facility they want to be in and not just one they could get."

"We're looking forward to getting through it and opening with a bang."

The upgrades aren't limited to the lounge. Improvements continue on the lower main floor and most recently it included the installation of a new overhead door to allow for better access for larger equipment and to allow for even larger and diverse events. Having another emergency exit is also anticipated to increase its crowd capacity.

The events centre continues to grow in popularity. CLEC already has received upwards of 50 bookings in the first three months of the year and many more are expected, especially with the upgrades.

"If you want to get it in, you'd better call soon from what I see, especially if you want a Saturday during the summer."

Barn Dance Apr. 13

Besides renting the facility for other large events, the Lions Club is hosting more community events. For Valentines, they held two dance--one for families, the other for adults. The family event was especially popular and the club hopes to build upon both next year.

Upcoming is a Spring Barn Dance on Apr. 13, featuring the popular band TC & Company. The event sold out last year and returns due to popular demand.

Early bird pricing continues until Apr. 16 on Eventbrite. You receive a $5 discount on your ticket when you type in the promo code "lionsrodeo."
