Cochrane firefighters and artist MJ Stead have teamed up to support veterans in need.

Senior firefighter, Dave Levisky, says donations are still being received at Fire Services to support the Veterans Food Bank and will continue to do so until November 22.

So far two truckloads of food have been collected, $1100 in cash and Stead's painting brought in $140. While hoping to raise more, MJ, was grateful to give back to those that have and currently serve for us. "It’s important for all of us to give back in whatever way we can. The Veterans gave everything for us, they deserve our support."

This is the second year both Fire Services and Stead have campaigned to raise awareness for the food bank which supports veterans of all ages. On top of the station accepting donations, Levisky, Captain Martin Reuter and firefighter Jason Hamel upped the ante and participated in the physically gruelling challenge '3 Peaks Stairclimb' which saw the men essentially climb the worlds three tallest peaks, Everest, K2, & Kanchenjunga or just over 26,000 metres. Raising a good portion of the $1100 through a go fund me page, Levisky, thought the challenge was a great way to raise more awareness not only for military members but all first respondents. "It is a deeper question, as we've gone through this journey over the last couple of years is that while the food and money is important, that there is an underlying issue around it and that is the PTSD component that people are now starting to talk about and I am glad the conversations are now starting to be had."

Both Stead and Levisky will be back on board next year as they look forward to bringing more awareness to the Veterans Food Bank and PTSD.

You are welcome to drop off non-perishable food donations at Fire Services or donate through the 3 Peaks Stairclimb Challenge go fund me page here.
