Rocky View County (RVC) Council has approved the sale of its Bow RiversEdge Campground property to the nonprofit society that has managed by park since 2000.

RVC has been in negotiating with the Bow RiversEdge Campground Society (BRECS) for some time and now with council's approval the nonprofit society will take ownership of h 12-acre property once purchase agreements are completed.

The county will realize just over $1 million from the sale, which will be directed to its tax stabilization reserve used to support council-approved programs and initiatives, and serves as a source of funding in case of natural or manmade disasters.

The popular RV park is located near the Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

“The relationship between RVC and the Bow RiversEdge Campground Society has always been strong," says Reeve Greg Boehlke. "But having a campground on land located in one municipality, owned by another municipality, and managed by the society was just too complicated. Selling the land gives the society more freedom and flexibility in ensuring its long-term success,”

In 1970, RVC purchased 38 acres of land for a gravel operation to support the county’s eastern road network. In 2000, 12 acres of the gravel operation were reclaimed, and the county granted a license of occupancy to BRECS to develop the campground. The land was annexed into Cochrane in 2004, but ownership remained with Rocky View County.

BRECS is jointly operated by the local Rotary and Lions clubs and from its profits donates generously to local causes to the tune of well over $1.2 million over the last decade. It has also donated to emergency needs outside of the community, like their $50,000 donation to help with the rebuilding efforts in Fort McMurray in 2016.
