Last week, the Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) gave Rocky View Schools a ‘C’ Grade for their Tobacco Policies but the division says they missed some details.

The report card from ASH looked at areas of education, possession and enforcement in determining how Alberta School Boards handle Tobacco.

In the case of Rocky View, ASH gave scores of zero for education opportunities for students and staff.

In a statement e-mailed to AIR 106.1, Superintendent Greg Luterbach says that is not true.

“Overall, ASH’s report card on school boards is only based on a review of written policy/procedures and does not take into consideration that many of the items being evaluated would never be outlined and wrapped up in policy or procedure, i.e. includes education opportunities about tobacco use and cessation for students - rather this is rolled out through programming offered such as our Social Emotional Learning Initiative. “

Last week, RVS Board Trustees officially added cannabis to their drug policy meaning that the substance is strictly prohibited on school grounds and at all school functions.

RVS will follow the same disciplinary actions for cannabis as they do alcohol and tobacco.
