You can expect to see beefed up patrols on our local area roadways and highways this weekend.

Cochrane RCMP, Sergeant David Hardy, Integrated Traffic Services, shares if you aren't willing to play by the rules on this first long weekend you may just end up chatting with one of their members. "It is a weekend where there is a lot of increased enforcement including the backcountry not only RCMP but other agencies step it up too. If you're not playing within the provincial rules and regulations there is a good chance you will have contact with a law enforcement officer. With any contact, there will be an investigation and you may be on the end of receiving paperwork if things are serious enough."

With nice weather expected this long weekend, traffic volume will be heavy. "Our provincial collision data clearly indicates that driving on holiday long weekends presents a greater exposure risk to being involved in a serious motor vehicle collision. The increased volume of traffic is a definite factor in the increased risk. The integrated traffic units will be out targeting the causes of serious collisions including aggressive driving, impaired driving, non-use of seatbelts and distracted driving."

Sgt. Hardy says there will be a number of check stops set up at strategic locations not only on the highways but also headed into popular camping and backcountry use areas. "There will be a lot of Albertans wanting to get out and get away from the city for some quiet time in the backcountry and campgrounds. The RCMP, Alberta Sheriffs and Integrated Units will have full focus on Alberta HIghways this weekend and we're going to be there to make sure everything is safe."

A last reminder before loading up the car. "We just want everybody to enjoy the weekend, drive safe and make responsible good choices."
