Students from three Cochrane schools that participated in a Town of Cochrane Compost program are being thanked with the opportunity to attend a play called Dreaming Alberta.

The students from Holy Spirit, Glenbow and Manachaban Schools have been learning about and participating in a compost program since November.

Fabrizio Bertolo, Manager of Waste and Recycling with the Town of Cochrane, says at the start of the program in each school they sorted through garbage and showed students how much was organic material, which was over 65%.

The students were educated about organic material and were asked to implement an organics recycling program.

The Town of Cochrane provided the schools with green bins and charts to show what could safely be thrown in the bins. When they returned to the schools after a month of composting to do another waste sorting, Bertolo said "the result was just amazing, they reduced so much, they reduced it by over 50%"

Bertolo adds that the Town felt " it is so important to work with the students, they are so keen to learn and they are so great at teaching their parents".

Dreaming Alberta was commissioned by the Town of Cochrane to raise awareness about the Organics Collection program.  It was written and produced by teatro dell-eco and is playing at the Cochrane Ranche House to the public on April 12 and 13.
