There may have been a modest number of people participating in the townwide community cleanup, but they were both energetic and imaginative.
A one-tonne truck was filled with trash collected from various parks and pathways throughout the community by about 50 people, May 12, with about half of the participants from the Riverview Community. Cochrane's Off-Leash Advocacy Group also participated and with their help close to 40 lbs. of dog poop was collected from trails and parks.
Erika Lange and Jason Cyr targeted the three playgrounds in the River Heights communities and recruited the help of a garbage gobbling T-Rex. Lange worked her way through the playgrounds in the outfit, armed with two trash pickers, while Cyr bagged the trash.
Twenty-seven members of the Riverview community cleaned their neighbourhood and their large pile of refuge included items washed ashore the Bow River, including a hot tub cover.
It's the fourth year of the townwide community and organizer Marni Fedeyko says she remains committed its purpose.
"A beautiful community is something we all benefit from and the passionate people that did help saw value in what we were trying to create," says Fedeyko.
She believes this year's location in the southwest corner of the parking lot behind the SLS Family Sports Centre wasn't the best with construction underway in the area and the massive lineups for the compost giveaway and says every year is a learning experience.
"I would do it again but I believe the event would be better held in Mitford so we could create an education hub to discuss diversion initiatives, give away free compost and encourage people to pick up trash."
"I would like to hold it again but only if we can be at a centralized location working together and branding as a townwide initiative."
