The Cochrane RCMP say while thefts have gone down from what was being reported a couple of months ago, calls are still coming in.

On April 2 at 3 pm, Cochrane RCMP responded to a call of an attempted break-in the McLean Creek/ Elbow Falls area which involved a mom feeding her child.

Corporal Troy Savinkoff says the mom was breastfeeding her child in a locked vehicle when she was approached by two individuals. "They attempted to break into her vehicle with a crowbar."

Savinkoff states although the mom tried to alert the suspects of her presence in the locked car, they still proceeded to try and gain entry. "It was at that point that she went into the front of the vehicle grabbed the set of keys and drove away. As the victim drove away the males got into a dark coloured Chevy Avalanche and drove away as well."

A  composite sketch has been released of one of the suspects in hopes to locate the individual.

Corporal Savinkoff commends the mom for taking swift action in the case. "In most crimes, perpetrators are doing it because they don't think anybody is around, so when they do come across people they would immediately flee. It is quite alarming to a detachment in the RCMP that there would be a case that even after being alerted to the presence of the victim in the vehicle that they would still continue to make an attempt to enter the vehicle. It was very quick thinking of her at that point when she saw that they weren't simply running away to get in the driver's side of the vehicle and drive away from the area."

In this case, there wasn't much the woman could do in terms of safeguarding, but Cpl. Savinkoff wants to remind residents to once again keep valuables out of cars, doors locked and their eyes open. "Even though I believe our recent arrests and efforts have curtailed a large amount of this type of crime it is still ever present. We are still encouraging people to keep their eyes open. We are still having neighbourhoods in Cochrane where people are getting broken into and we also notice that there have been thefts recently in the Redwood Meadows area and outside the Cochrane area."

If you recognize the suspect from the composite sketch or have any information on any other crime contact the Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
