The man arrested by the RCMP on Friday afternoon in Cochrane has been released with no charges being laid.

The investigation into the shooting of a 60-year-old German tourist on Hwy. 1A west of the Chief Goodstoney Rodeo Centre as the RCMP followup on leads provided. 

The RCMP credit the media with helping them contact the RV driver who was at the crime scene when it occurred. He had phoned the RCMP at that time of the incident but then continued on his journey.

The German victim remains in hospital. Surgery was successful he's reported to be in stable, but critical condition.

Exactly what has become of the 4-door black Chrysler Sebring seized by the RCMP has not been made clear, nor have many more details been released on the case.

“We know how much the public is interested, and wanting an update on this terrible incident, but we are mindful of not compromising our investigation,” says Inspector Lauren Weare, of Cochrane Detachment. “A solid investigation which will stand the tests of the court is methodical and takes time. We thank the public for their patience while our members focus on their tasks.”

The idea that the shooting was road rage has been discarded as a motive and the RCMP have indicated they don't believe it was a random shooting, implying the man shot may have been a case of mistaken identity.

In the meantime, the outpouring of support for the German man and three family members travelling with him continues. They have also received the support of agencies, like Victims Services, and have been in touch with the German Consulate,

Tourism Minister Condemns Shooting

With worldwide media attention on the case, Alberta Culture and Tourism minister Ricardo Miranda has condemned the shooting and says the government extends its support and thoughts to the victim and his family.

He calls it a senseless crime and defends Alberta's record for visitors to be able to travel the province safely.

"This appears to be a singular incident, and not at all indicative of the experience of most travellers to Alberta. Thousands of tourists from Germany and other countries visit Alberta each year and enjoy safe, memorable experiences in our breathtaking landscapes."
