Cochrane RCMP was kept busy Monday evening (June 11).

Corporal Troy Savinkoff says as of yesterday afternoon (June 12) investigators were still piecing all the details together on everything that went down with a crime spree involving a group of individuals from Morley that occurred in the Springbank area.

The crime spree began around 10 pm with a group of individuals trying to steal effects and vehicles but in a very aggressive manner. "They bear sprayed multiple people, got in physical confrontations with multiple people, wore balaclavas and they may have even been brandishing a firearm, we are investigating that part of it."

In total five people from Morley will be facing extensive and serious charges stemming from vehicle thefts, bear spray attacks, suspected break-ins, damages to a house as wells as RCMP vehicle and injured RCMP members.

Corporal Savinkoff says as of yesterday they were still taking statements to see which individuals were involved in each case. "We are pulling video surveillance from multiple locations, interviewing multiple people and taking statements from the people that we have in custody right now. Right now we have five people in custody but we're still investigating and looking at the possibility there could be one or more people involved that we don't have in custody."

The timeline for the incidents that occurred is below:

  • Around 10:40 pm, a pedestrian was assaulted by some motorists and attacked with bear spray.
  • Shortly before 11:00 pm, a resident of Rocky View County discovered two males and a female in the garage of her home, where the intruders were rummaging through a vehicle. Cochrane RCMP Traffic Services and Detachment members responded to this report and encountered a suspect truck.  This truck rammed a police transport, causing minor injuries to the constable.  The truck was stopped by police and the occupants fled on foot.  Calgary Police Services generously supported the RCMP with assisting constables and a police helicopter.  With the help of RCMP Police Dog Services, a young male and two adult females were arrested from this truck.  One constable from Cochrane Detachment suffered minor injuries while tracking these assailants.
  • Shortly after 11:00 pm, another resident of Rocky View County encountered assailants in another truck near her home.  These assailants attempted to enter the home and may have attempted to drive towards the homeowner in the truck.  The truck struck the home and caused some damage.
  • A short time later, nearby residents found some assailants trying to steal vehicles in the neighbourhood.
  • Around 11:30 pm, some athletes were attacked by an assailant with bear spray in Rocky View County.
  • Around 11:45 pm, a motorist was attacked with bear spray during a possible attempt to steal his vehicle.

Corporal Savinkoff couldn't go into investigative details but did say the case was coming together and they were making great headway. "As far as identifying who was driving certain vehicles and what offences certain individuals did."

The victim of the ramming was examined at the hospital and has been released. The Constable injured during the foot chase is recovering from scrapes and bruises, while the other member who was in the rammed vehicle was treated in the hospital for a good portion of the evening and has been released. "He does have injuries and it's not clear...no broken bones or anything like that..but it's unclear what his ability to come to work how far back it will be in his recovery."

A list of charges should be released today and the suspects are all known to the RCMP. "We had done a great deal of really effective work a few months ago where we had a great deal of people causing a lot of auto thefts in custody, we were aware of these individuals but at the time they weren't related to the larger issue going on, but they have obviously changed and decided to be active."

Cochrane RCMP is asking anyone with additional information regarding these events to contact them at 403-851-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
