The German tourist shot on Hwy. 1A on Aug. 2 was actually travelling eastbound, not westbound as first believed, and made two brief detours just prior to being shot in the head by a passing motorist just west of the Goodstoney Rodeo Centre.

With this new information, RCMP are hoping there may be more witnesses stepping forward to help in their investigation of the incident that has left the 60-year old man with what have been called serious and life-altering injuries. A tip line--1-844-887-6287--has been established for potential witnesses to contact the investigative team.

Today, the RCMP released more details on the route travelled by the victim and his family prior to the shooting.

Vehicle driven by the victim, including license plate number. While driving eastbound on Highway 1A, the man detoured into the Nakoda Lodge briefly then continued east, travelling off the highway once again on to Branch Road, an unmarked road, and driving a few kilometres before returning to Highway 1A and continuing east.

Moments later, approximately 1km west of the Goodstoney Rodeo Centre, the black Dodge Durango, bearing Alberta license plate E-62780, was passed by the suspect vehicle. As the suspect vehicle passed, a gunshot was fired from the passenger side into the driver’s window, striking the driver of the Durango in the head. The suspect vehicle continued eastbound and has not been located. The Durango went several hundred meters before leaving the road and crashing into trees on the north side of the road.

"Given that we now know the victim and his family drove to the Nakoda Lodge as well up Branch Road it is hoped seeing these images will help to bring additional witnesses forward who can assist us with the investigation," says Peters.

That includes any dashcam footage passing motorists may have captured.

Indications are the shooter was driving in darker coloured, likely older model sedan, said Peters.

The RCMP haven't closed the door on any possible motives for the shooting, including road rage that had been previously suggested as the cause.

"We haven't unearthed anything in the investigation suggesting there was a conflict leading up to the shooting," said Peters. "So, all investigation avenues are still open, however, there's nothing to point us solidly in that direction at this point."

"Without a doubt, the shot was intentionally fired. Whether or not the victim was the intended person we don't know at this time."

The male adult arrested on Aug. 3 was released on Aug. 4. and days later the seized Chrysler Sebring was also cleared.

"Both that individual who was taken into custody, as well as that vehicle, have been fully investigated and we're ruling them out of being involved in this incident," says Cpl. Curtis Peters, RCMP communications officer.

The victim and his family has since flown home to Germany and will remain in touch with the RCMP while the investigation continues.
