Last Saturday morning, hundreds of volunteers were given thanks.

While volunteers have been recognized for a number of years in Cochrane, the Volunteer Appreciation Event held at the Cochrane Movie House celebrated its 10th year, this year.

Three hundred fifty people attended the celebration which included a choice of one of three movies, entertainment from the Cochrane Youth Singers, refreshments and food, as well as numerous door prizes donated from our local business community.

Brenda Dennis, Volunteer Services and Community Programmer, loves this event and says nothing is more important than those that give freely and willingly of themselves. "I cannot imagine Cochrane without volunteers. They are the people that absolutely give of themselves. Think of the non-profit organizations that would not exist without volunteers or the big events/community celebrations that would not happen. We would not be the vibrant community that we are without volunteers."

Dennis thanked the local business community for their ongoing support of the Volunteer Appreciation celebration and shares they are always willing to give to those that give back to the community. "We make businesses also aware of what volunteers do in the community and they are so supportive, we had so many door prizes that were given out in every theatre."

Although volunteers are not usually looking for kudos, Dennis, says many were touched by the recognition. "We create this whole day to say thanks as a community for all that you do. Volunteers don't expect that they don't do what they do to be recognized and that is obvious. There were a few touching moments in the end when a few people came up to me and so sincerely said 'thank you so much for all of this' it was so heartfelt and meaningful. As much as volunteers don't expect it really touches them that we do this."

The Mayor, members of Town Council, some Town Senior Administration staff and the Volunteer Appreciation committee also attended the celebration.
