When it comes to having a baby the road to conception can be impossible for some.

For those who want a family but are unable due to a variety of reasons, the idea of surrogacy or egg donorship may be appealing.

Nathan Chan, Proud Fertility, Managing Director, says their goal is to support parents, surrogate moms, and egg donors on a life changing journey.

"We aim to assist and support our clients, and we think of our clients as egg donors, surrogate mothers, and intended parents. One in 6 Canadians are affected by infertility and these numbers could be higher depending on if you include singles/gay couples; contrary to misconception people tend think it is very easy to adopt or there are many options for singles but there aren't, so surrogacy and egg donation may be an accessible option to grow your own family."

Candidates have to keep in mind that surrogacy can be an expensive option, costing anywhere from $80,000 and up depending on which path or journey you take.

Proud Fertility surrogate mothers and egg donors exist all across Canada but couples considering this option come internationally.

"The intended parents who come to seek help come from across Canada and internationally. I have clients from Norway, France, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Australia, and the US as well."

There are only a handful of organizations offering this type of service, and it is still very grassroots.

Chan says there are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to the world of surrogacy; such as what if the surrogate mom decides to keep the baby or the fact that women who choose to be surrogates are being exploited, but Chan says this is not the case.

"Women in Canada are doing it altruistically and they lead their normal lives just like they were with their own children when they were pregnant. People come with open hearts and they are so selfless and generous."

Those who choose to donate eggs are also very much valued, adds Chan, as there is no money attached to donating.  Instead it is a gift some women choose to give others.

"Often surrogates are the only ones revered as life givers where as egg donors are often forgot about in the equation but their gift is extremely vital. Egg donors are educated to provide this option to intended parents and they can give this gift as a known egg donation as compared to the traditional route of intended parents only using eggs purchased from an egg bank from the US or an anonymous egg donation."

Women who choose to be surrogates come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

"Women who come forward and become surrogates, come in all shapes and sizes and walks of life. You can be 21-49, you can have multiple c-sections, they could be single, married, divorced, they can even be grandmothers. Their occupations could be someone who is a customer service representative or they could be someone who is a registered nurse. So it is a very open and inclusive role."

Surrogacy may not be for everyone, but as Chan points out, surrogacy can provide a result for some that would otherwise not exist.

"This is 2016, we are making things possible with technologies."

If you would like to find out more information on taking this journey, Chan is having an informal meeting at Deja Brew, Thursday, December 1, 11:30 am -1 pm.
