Here in Southern Alberta, we are known to have two seasons .. winter and construction!

As we prepare for an unpredictable winter ahead, some of that construction here in Cochrane will be put on hold.

Progress on the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge in Cochrane will pause during the winter months and resume in May 2020.

The bridge located across the Bow River near the SLS Family Rec Centre started back in August of 2018, and along with the arterial road, connections will include on-street bike lanes as well as a separate multi-use pathway that will connect to Cochrane’s existing pathway system.

Rick Deans, Senior Manager of Infrastructure with the Town of Cochrane, says they have an elaborate plan in place for May and are still on schedule for a fall 2020 completion.

"Crews will be back to work in May of 2020, and they'll be putting the approach slab down and they will be putting the railing on the bridge as well as the asphalt wear surface down on the bridge itself. That work will most likely take a few months."

Completion of the project will bring additional convenience to residents that live on the south side of the Bow River, as they will be able to access the downtown commercial area and maneuver through the town without having to access highway 22.

Deans says that cooperative weather conditions will play into the bridge finishing on time."The ultimate goal is to have the whole roadway corridor open for traffic and pedestrian use in the fall of 2020, depending of course on weather ."
