A four-year-old child remains in critical condition following a drowning incident in the Kings Heights neighbourhood.

Mounties were called at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3 after they received reports of a missing child in the Kings Heights neighbourhood.

"Shortly after receiving this call, RCMP received a call of a child found in medical distress. Upon arrival, it was discovered that bystanders had removed the child from a neighbourhood pond and administered medical care until EMS arrived. EMS transported the child via ground ambulance to a Calgary hospital," a police release stated.

Police are continuing to investigate and say they have, 'received exceptional community co-operation in this investigation'. They are kindly asking everyone to be mindful of the privacy of the family during this difficult time.

Previous media reports said the child was found deceased, but the RCMP clarified that the information was erroneously provided by the Alberta RCMP.

"We regret the mistake and any anxiety this may have caused."
