On February 25, The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was assigned to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Canmore.

At around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, February 24, an RCMP member was conducting a traffic stop with a cooperative motorist in the town of Canmore. During the traffic stop, the traffic stop, the RCMP officer observed an approaching vehicle do a U-turn to avoid the stop. 

The RCMP member then pursued the vehicle at which time the driver fired twice upon him, damaging the RCMP vehicle's windshield.

The pursuit continued and the suspect vehicle entered a cul-de-sac, where it became stuck in the snow.

The RCMP member fired upon the suspect vehicle, at which time the driver left the vehicle and fled into a wooded area.

A short time later, the driver was located and was transported to the hospital for treatment of gunshot injuries.

ASIRT's investigation will look into the use of force used by the officer.
