Emergency Preparedness Week is currently taking place in Cochrane and around the country. This year, the theme for this week is to 'Be Ready for Anything'.

Fire Inspector Jeff Avery with Cochrane Fire Services gives a rundown of what a proper emergency kit will have.

“The biggest thing is to be prepared for 72 hours, or three days, and that's just by making your emergency preparedness kit. The first thing you want to have in there is an emergency plan, phone numbers. What are you going to do, where are you going to go, things that you need to set up because panic can set in in a hurry."

Avery says that here in Cochrane an emergency can be anything from power outages, fires, floods, and even tornados.

“Do you have enough water in there for three days? The rule of thumb is two liters of water per day, per person so make sure you have that put away. Make sure you have enough food put away. Make some flashlights, batteries candles, matches, a first aid kit, and a battery-powered radio.”

He says there is one thing a lot of people forget when making their kit.

“I find that a lot of people don't put cash away. Just in case it's a major power outage and no visa and debit machines are working, at least you got a little bit of cash to get you through if you do have to go get something.”

“I have seen families that have been part of a major fire that has left their home with absolutely nothing, and really nowhere to go, so you know just that kit can go a long way.”
